So, tom, you post (as indicated by the ~tom), but does DEBB ever post (perhaps indicated by a ~debb)?

Nope. Just Tom here. When I first started posting to AOL/SDMB I happened to use our common sig. I have now used it across several NGs and MBs and I leave it alone just to avoid confusion among people who see me post elsewhere. I'm one of those people with a teflon-like resistance to nicknames, so I've never spent much time looking for the "perfect" ID.

Am I the only one tickled by the juxtaposition of Tom's username and the epitaph, "Fancy Pants"?

Tom is probably the smartest person I've ever met on-line or in real life. It's like seeing a biography with a title like, Albert Einstein, Big Cheese or Sir Isaac Newton, Wise Guy

So, if this isn't too personal a question, what's Debb like? For some reason, I picture her as petite, dark-haired, and (of course) very intelligent, and I think she probably has wire-framed glasses and a slightly bemused expression.

I have to admit she's right up there with Cecil on my list of fun people to speculate about.

Great senese of humor. Smart. Not as into book-l'arnin' as I am, but she reads a lot. She taught herself to spin, then weave. She has done nearly all the fabric crafts: crochet, knit, sew, hook rugs, tatting, lace-making. She got herself a sheep when she was heavily into those crafts so she could take her own wool from sheep to caftan. She has taught herself the lap dulcimer and both varieties of concertina. Currently she is into making costume jewelry. She always insists on having animals. Currently: 1 horse, 1 Boxer, 1 Manx, 1 Calico, 1 Gray Tabby, 1 iguana, 2 geckoes, 2 anoles, 2 White's tree frogs, 1 Kenyan Sand Boa, 1 Ball/Royal Python, several assorted fish and snails (she just got into this and her population changes frequently). We used to have a Bearded Dragon, but he died of an infection last year. We also have a steadily changing population of crickets, mealworms, and mice to keep the various cold-blooded critters fed. After a number of years raising dairy goats, September 26, 1993 was Freedom-From-Goats day as we had to give them up as too much work when we got the two-legged kids. Son has turned 10 and joined 4-H, so as of last Saturday, we have 3 goats, again (Pygmy goats, this time, instead of Alpine and La Mancha milkers.)

Not dark or petite. Medium height, medium build, sandy hair, terrific smile. She grew up as a Michigan farmer (her dad ran a farrier school for years and her brother also farms and shoes horses) and she can throw hay bales when she needs to (while maintaining her feminine decorum, of course). She's a nurse.

Ursa, thank you. I suspect that I am able to create a "smart" impression by relying on a really good memory combined with an avocation for reference works (collecting and reading). (I really want Bermuda999's search engine or technique; he can find anything on the 'net.)

As long as there's a whole thread bearing his name, I would like to state for the record, that Tom is the smartest person ever to post on any SDMB, or para-SDMB, ever, bar none, including Yours Truly.

Surgoshan we mortals cannot delete our posts. If you check the delete box you get a nice message that says only moderators and administrators can delete posts. I suppose you could remove all the text and add a few spaces so it would be an empty post, but I hesitate to do that since I am already told too many of my posts lack content.

1. Wow, I'm glad to see you here, Rowan!

2. I dunno. Tom is frighteningly intelligent, without a doubt, and I love to read whatever he's posting, but I wouldn't say Rowan's even slightly less brilliant. Plus, there's MKoenecke, Stephmon, UndeadDude, IanRey, Pope Bob (Big Iron5) and even Hpstr/Dutch/George, in his own style. In fact, I'm leaving out several amazing intellects from the original SDMB. Tom, CKDextHavn and Rowan certainly corner the market on theological knowledge and interpretation, though they aren't limited to those topics alone.

What Pearl said. I have no idea where this weird idea started that I have extraordinarily high intelligence. (I just own a lot of reference books, really!)

I am genuinely honored to be mentioned in the same breath as these other luminaries. Thank you, Pam (and gracious Tom).

As for Tom Terrific, he most certainly is of the highest intellectual order, and he is among five or so posters on the various boards/NGs that I visit whose posts I always read and enjoy. However, the thing that impresses me most about Tom, what IMO distinguishes him most from the others whose posts I also generally thoroughly enjoy (much more than five, of course), is his awesome patience and self-control and ability to criticize deftly, gently, and without flame-provoking excess. In other words, he's wicked smart and knowledgable, and he's discreet and not the least bit full of himself or infected with braggadoccio. I respect him immensely.

Although he does share my perverse instinct to abuse Cyberian from time to time.

BigIron! Your Pope-ness!

Oh YES! What a great place this is going to be! PLEASE hang around here, please, please? (Besides, I don't think Cyb knows about it yet -- and don't anybody tell him!).

And, to bring this thread back to its topic, I'm sure you've all noticed by now that Tom is the new Great Forum moderator! Hurrah for Tom!

Thanks, Melin -- I'll try to post when I can, although I already participate in too many MBs and NGs, probably.

Absolutions round! For all my friends!

Tom, please give my regards to Deb; she sounds like my kinda gal. We've got three goats too, and while they're a handful, I think it's gonna be goats fer life.( My Hon may disagree, I'm the animaniac.)

As to your deference to reference, you obviously have a great overarching map in your mind to be able to find exactly the right information in your storehouse. That, sir, is a brilliant mind.
