CanadianSue - Responsible pet owner? HA!

It has come to my attention after a recent phone call that CS has KILLED four of her beloved son's pet goldfish.

She just HAD to clean the tank and now her mindless irresponsibility has claimed the lives of at least three of these family pets, with a fourth fish listed in critical condition.

Did she use bleach or harmful cleaners?

Did she place the fish in the washing machine thinking the "gentle" cycle would buff them up a bit?

Quotes from our phone call:

CS: "I have to run to the store to get some fish before my son gets back... I don't think he'll believe that they are just sleeping...on top of the tank... upside down..."

Me: "You mean you have committed 3 counts of tetracide and want to try and cover it up?"

CS: "Yes, exactly"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sue - I want some answers, or I may have to get the PETA people after you.
Take care.
The dachshund of my acquaintance is firmly convinced she is a very short Irish Wolfhound. She terrorizes the neighbor husky, who outweighs her by a factor of at least 20.
You could always explain to your dachsie, in a fearful tone of voice, that the pit bull, Rottweiler, or Doberman down the street is planning on taking over his/her yard, and must be stopped. Then let nature take its course.
[serious mode] Sue, if you'd like some help and/or advice as far as what may have happened to the goldfish, let me know. Unfortunately, buying four more fish may just be subjecting them to the same lethal circumstances that downed the original four, and junior may watch their slow deaths instead. Did you use Amquel or another product to remove chlorine, chloramines, and ammonia to new water? Was there a sharp difference in water temperature? Did you use any kind of cleaning product in the bowl? It sounds like you definitely have done something that wiped them out.
I just cleaned 40 gallons worth of fish tank the other day, with over $300 worth of fish within. They were a little stressed, but no casualties. [/serious mode]
Someone, call Fish Protective Services! Those goldfish need to be removed from this monster's custody ASAP!
Thanks Ruff!! Actually I think what I did was take them from a nice temp controlled tank and put them in water that was too cold. The remaining fish seem to be doing okay, altho one of them seems a bit sluggish but the new water is back to the temp of the old water now. Probably not a bright move on my part to put them in a stew pot to play while I cleaned the tank.
Lesson learned!!
Actually Sue, I would postulate that there was something in the stew pot that poisoned the fish rather than the cold water shocking them. Goldfish are fairly resistant; it can make them uncomfortable, but unless the temperature difference was huge, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.
Somehow after reading this thread, I can only think of:
fish heads
fish heads
rolly polly fish heads
fish heads
fish heads
eat them up
yum
On a side note, as a fish tank owner, having to see their little bodies being flushed down a toilet is kind of sad.
I still wish I could figure out what the heck you did Sue, sheesh!
Actully, don't feel too bad. Goldfish are relatively easy to kill if you don't know what you're doing.
While they'll easily tolerate temperature changes (think of the ones that survive in outdoor ponds over the winter), other changes can send them into immediate shock. PH is a big killer, and that just might be the case here, with that stewpot.
Goldfish are also TERRIBLY dirty fish and require a LOT of regular tank cleanings and water changes so the nitrates and ammonia don't build to fatal levels. Hopefully the fishies are in at least a 10 gallon tank with a good filtration system. If not ... *crazy fish lady makes mean growly faces* ... they need to be, for just that reason. Then just buy a good syphon filter, clean it every two weeks at least and make sure to do 25% water changes weekly.
When you change the water, make sure you use AmQuel or any of the numerous dechlorinators (I like Amquel, it does triple duty) as well as a slime protectant like Stress Coat and Stress Zyme to keep the healthy bacteria happy and flourishing. That also helps keep your nitrate levels down.
That reminds me, my gouramis are hungry.
Carry on.
I'm happy to report that they are all in their places with bright shiny faces in the wonderfully clean and shining fish tank. No more fatalities.
I'm pretty sure you are right about the stew pot Ruff. Something I definitely wont do again.
Suzeanne! My sister fish hobbiest! Hooray!
I have nothing much to add to what she said, except she's exactly right. Goldfish are filthy creatures, gluttons, and complete garbage eaters. I took the 10 gallon tank I had at school home to convert into a nursery for my baby cichlids; the lone goldfish in the tank is now in a 5-gallon tank that had been serving as the nursery. Anyhoo, while draining the water from Swimmy the King's (hey, I didn't name him, the students did!) tank, did he flee? Panic? Try to avoid the big thingys coming into his tank drastically rearranging his home? No. He swam up to my hand and bit it, repeatedly. "OOOoooh, is this food? I like food...food?" Meanwhile I was stunned by the amount of filth on the bottom of the tank. One lousy goldfish made as much of a mess as the 10 cichlids I have in a tank several times the size of his. I haven't had goldfish since I was my students' age, and I'm remembering why.
One more tip--goldfish are best kept in species tanks (that is, with only other goldfish) because of their hygiene problems. They tend to excrete a ton of ammonia into the tank water, they have a heavier slime coating, and seriously throw off the PH and nitrate/nitrite cycles. Popular as they are, they are a difficult fish to keep.
Give me African cichlids anyday.
Hey Suze, are you very knowledgeable in African species? I have one that I thought was a red fin borleyi when I bought him as a baby. He's grown huge and has completely different coloring than as a baby--black, irridescent blue around face, orange shoulders (but he's not a red shoulder peacock), faint barring, white tipped fins. He appears to be a haplochromis species, but I have no idea. Numerous web searches have yielded nothing, except his possible genus. I have a digital pic if you want to see.
Momma labidochromis is due to release her latest brood any day now. If you look in her mouth, you can see tiny eyes looking back.
